During this “time of covid 19” many patients have decreased their activity level. Even those who never exercised, at least they were getting into their cars, stepping out of their cars to go to work, or just to go anywhere. Now we have become much more reserved about where we are going and truthfully we are choosing to stay home watching TV, rather than walking in the mall (no guilt about watching Netflix!)
Some, I am happy to say, have taken good advantage of their free time-- taking walks and doing work outs mostly at home. But some, I am sad to say, have done nothing – especially with the excuse that “it is so hot outside”.
No excuse: I confirmed it today. There are countless numbers of websites on the internet about exercising in the comfort of your home. I checked it out myself. First I googled “exercises websites for seniors” and I got one that is free. It is called Exercise videos for people over 60. It includes video clips in these different categories: Mini workouts, Balance and coordination, Individual strength exercises, Flexibility and posture among its classifications. Then there is the Silver Sneakers website, where you have access to all live virtual classes and workshops (if your Medicare Advantage Plan includes the Silver Sneakers benefit). There is also the AARP website and the Medline website. Of course, there are many more for the younger generation as well. All it takes is you understanding that this is a must thing to do for your wellbeing – more so during these times.
Have the conviction that it is part of your life – forever- in which ever capacity you can do it. For those who start with the excuse of “the knee”, “the back”, or” this chronic condition” – simply ask your doctor what exercise you can safely do and asked to be refer to physical therapy if need be. Remember: the less exercise (movements) you do, the worse things will likely get!
