INCREASE SEEN IN THYROID CANCER
The American Cancer Society states that thyroid cancer is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the United States and has tripled in the past three decades. This increase is likely due to new diagnostic technology, like thyroid ultrasounds, which can detect small nodules that may have not otherwise been found previously.
Palm Beach Diabetes and Endocrine Specialist, P.A.’s own Dr. Barry Horowitz spoke with Tiffany Kenney at WPBF 25 News about the topic further, saying “About 60,000 people will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer this year.” He states thyroid cancer is about three times more likely to occur in women than men and that it is unknown as to why more women are diagnosed than men.
The thyroid gland is said to be very sensitive to radiation which is a leading risk factor for thyroid cancer, especially if exposed during childhood. Dr. Horowitz states that the concern is in the big doses of radiation which were used in the past to treat acne and enlarged tonsils and are currently used to treat certain cancers.
When asked about the exposure from mammograms and dental x-rays Dr. Horowitz replies, “There really isn’t clear evidence that increases the risk of thyroid cancer. However, we recommend when getting a dental procedure or mammogram that you wear guards to be able to diminish that exposure to the thyroid gland to radiation.” A thyroid guard, which is a lead collar that wraps around the neck, should be available at dentist offices and imaging centers.
Doctors say that the good news about thyroid cancer is that it is very curable. Rachel Green was diagnosed with thyroid cancer ten years ago. She had a thyroidectomy to remove the entire thyroid. Green says “People said if you have to have a cancer, this is the one you should get. Nobody wants to have cancer, but from my experience, it’s very manageable.”
